Born in Krefeld as the son of a German mother and a Dutch father, Christian was raised in various German cities until age 5 when the family settled in Brunssum. While studying at a school for economics, Christian turned 18 and he decided not to become an accountant. He left school in order to commence a study at fashion school in 1983. His eclectic mindset and devotion to fashion commenced a quest for knowledge, both artistic as well as technical with an almost obsessive attitude.
Monique, who would become Christian’s wife in 1992, was already his girlfriend and advised him to enter a fashion contest. Although the young competitor had to still pass his school exam, he finished a silk evening gown just before the deadline. Winning the ‘Concours de Couture’ and to be honored with the ‘Prix Guy Laroche’ in 1985, Christian was destined to work in fashion.
The first physical encounter with Paris and it’s fashion scene was after an invitation of Monsieur Guy Laroche who invited him to his design studio and his shows in October 1985. From that moment on Christian knew that Paris would become his second home, probably for life. He did not think about working in Paris at that time.
When Christian was asked to work as a free lancer at Emanuel Ungaro Haute couture in 1992, he did not hesitate and found the missing link in his career. The exceptional overall experience at the high fashion ateliers and studio on Avenue Montaigne would become of great influence on his view on couture and his future work. When he went back to Maastricht it was clear that everything had to change.
As Christian was mainly focusing on designing and selling ready to wear collections from Amsterdam to New York, he waited with developing his own couture signature until 1999.
The outcome of his first show during Paris Fashion Week at ‘ l’Hôtel d’Avaray ‘ in October 2000, by invitation of the Dutch ambassador, was an unmistakable success. A few months later Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of Orange appointed the young designer to become the first young creator to design for the next generation of the House of Orange for years to come.
Besides working for his own company and brand he kept designing collections as a free lancer for several fashion companies and taught and supported fashion students in Eindhoven, Paris and London during special projects such as ‘Couture in Orbit’ initiated by ESA ( European Space Agency).
January 2014 Christian showed his collection during Berlin Fashion Week and since January 2015 to date Christian presents his collections during Paris Haute Couture week off calendar. His first successful business case in China commenced with a boutique owner from Chengdu who bought almost all his designs mid 2015.
Nowadays his ready to wear line which is divided in two price ranges from ‘limited edition’ to ‘luxe’ is being revitalized.
